PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear parents and guardians,

We have come to the end of yet another term. It has made me very proud to see the continuous hard work, dedication and support of everyone. There have been many successful excursions, camps and events. These were all communicated to the Pinnacle family through our newsletters.

WHEN YOUR CHILD IS ACCUSED OF BULLYING

What should parents do when their child is accused by another parent of being a bully? The first step is always to work closely with us at school. We are experienced in working with students and helping them manage their behaviour.

What can you do?

  • Take a deep breath. It’s normal to experience a mixture of shame, denial, panic and defensiveness. Remember this is a description of behaviour that your child is exhibiting today, it is not who they are in their entirety, nor who they will be forever, if you respond and get help.
  • Focus on staying calm and listening to what’s being said. If the other parent is upset, assure them that you’re writing down the details so you’ll remember them correctly. If tempers boil over, say you’ll phone back later.
  • Take time to process the information. Once you have the information, take time for yourself to process how it makes you feel, so that when you approach your child, you are calm and in control of your own emotions.
  • Talk with your child. The goal is to get the facts – a calm, non-judgmental discovery process. Do you know what they are talking about? What happened? Is any of it true? Stay calm and make it safe for your child to tell the whole story. Explain that whatever happened, you are going to help resolve the situation.
  • Be the grown-up. “Can you help me see why the other kid sees it their way?” you might ask. “How would you feel if he did that to you?” Try to understand the antecedents – insecurity, anger, teasing, peer dynamics, or something going on at home.
  • Teach your child responsibility. Even if your child swears the other child started it, they are responsible for owning their contribution. Let your child know you are going to make sure it doesn’t continue. Help your child make amends, (often best done with the school counsellor). The school can be of help here as problems rarely happen in isolation and may have already surfaced at school.
  • Give your child social-emotional tools. Teach face-saving ways to deal with conflict and how to avoid escalating drama, like walk away, tell a teacher.
  • Get help. This should include contacting the school or, in serious cases, getting a professional evaluation of the child to identify possible anxiety, depression or inability to read social cues.
  • Support growth and change. The best message is that life is full of opportunities to reinvent ourselves if we are willing to do the hard work of owning our mistakes, understanding the feelings and behaviours involved and getting new strategies for developing new and better behaviours.

I wish you all a great time with your families.

CURRICULUM COORDINATOR

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Pinnacle College has adopted a new reporting system to report student achievement in Primary, as developed by the SA Education Standards Authority. The common grade scale describes student performances in each learning area based on the Australian Curriculum outcomes. Below are the terms and descriptions utilised to assess your child’s learning:

Outstanding (A) The student has an extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can readily apply this knowledge. In addition, the student has achieved a very high level of competence in the processes and skills and can apply these skills to new situations.

High (B) The student has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the content and a high level of competence in the processes and skills. In addition, the student is able to apply this knowledge and these skills to most situations.

Sound (C) The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills.

Basic (D) The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and has achieved a limited level of competence in the processes and skills.

Limited (E) The student has an elementary knowledge and understanding in few areas of the content and has achieved very limited competence in some of the processes and skills.

There will be a MySIS Workshop for parents held in Term 2 – you will receive more information as the date approaches. The workshop will involve two components: how to use the basic functions of the information system and how to effectively monitor your child’s progress.

Thank you warmly for your ongoing support and I wish you all a fruitful & enjoyable holiday!

Tuba Cimen

DISCIPLINE COORDINATOR

At Pinnacle College we use the school management, communication and reporting tool – Mysis. The system is used to record attendance, assignments and student behaviour.

Student behaviour, both positive and negative, is assigned points and accumulates on their individual records.

Parents are able to see all behaviour records logged by teachers and coordinators on their child’s Mysis account.

Excellent behaviour in class such as great teamwork, being prepared for class, using good manners, helpfulness and good work ethic can all be rewarded by positive points. The points accumulate and can lead to reward and recognition, both individually and for the student’s school house team.

Unacceptable behaviour is logged on to Mysis by the teacher who observed the behaviour – class teacher, yard duty teacher, specialist teacher. If positive or negative behaviour is reported by bus drivers, neighbours etc. those incidents will be logged on Mysis by the Discipline Coordinator.

It is important that we keep a record of student behaviour, both positive and negative to keep parents informed about their child. Any behavioural notifications that are made are able to be viewed on Mysis by the parent at any time.

Pinnacle College believe that education is a team effort between school and home and encompasses the whole child, academically, socially and emotionally.

If you have any trouble accessing your child’s Mysis page please contact the front office for assistance.

Have a lovely and safe holiday period and we look forward to seeing our students again rested, refreshed and ready to learn.

Kindest regards
Kylie Burton

HARMONY DAY REPORT

“We are all different but everyone belongs.”

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As you are aware, our school celebrated Harmony Day on the 21st of March. This annual event is a fantastic opportunity for us to appreciate the diverse cultures, which make Australia such a wonderful, vibrant place to live. Students across the Golden Grove and Gilles Plains campuses dressed in cultural clothes or the colour orange to show their support for multiculturalism. Classroom teachers conducted special activities based on different countries around the world, we ate a special shared lunch and even tried to create a school mural using the phrase #HARMONY. It was a highly enjoyable day filled with lots of learning and positivity. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered or visited the school. We hope to see you again at the next event!

Warm regards,
The SRC Teacher Representatives

PASTORAL CARE

Assalam Aleikum

With year 7 Girls we enjoyed a reading and excursion programme on the weekend. We find that these programmes are beneficial both spiritually and socially, in order to improve the collective spirit we aim for. We were busy with reading the book series “Everything points to Allah” in the morning and after some snacks we went to Ice Skating and to Oporto for lunch.

We hope to organize more activities in the next term.

FOUNDATION – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear Parents,

What a busy and productive term our class has had! The children have worked so hard in all subject areas and I am extremely proud of all my students and their achievements throughout the term. Children have settled with the classroom routines and expectations and many have formed strong friendships.

Harmony Day was such a great success. We had students wearing beautiful and bright costumes representing the countries they come from. Our students were exposed to many cultures and learnt that many new things about different countries.

In the English curriculum we have very busy learning sounds through the InitiaLit program. Our new program allows children to be taught phonics using a synthetic approach alongside a rich literature and vocabulary component. Children have met characters, Sammy Seal, Andy Ant, Iggy Insect, Poppy Princess, Fifi Flamingo, Tommy Tiger, Rosie Rabbit and Maggie Mouse and are already beginning to read and write simple words. Children are enjoying our genre component and are loving writing and drawing about their weekend news.

In the Mathematics curriculum we have been learning about length. The children have been busy using concrete materials to measure the lengths of objects. Children loved making their ‘long’ or ‘short’ dog and measuring its length. We then moved onto 2D shapes. Children loved using all sorts or shapes to create a picture. We also learnt that all shapes have sides and corners. I also have continued to reinforce the formation of numerals.

Thank you to the parents who attended our ‘Foundation Parent Breakfast’. It was a great opportunity for you to develop friendships amongst the parents in our cohort. Thank you to all parents who continue to support their child with homework, please ensure you continue to support your child with educational activities during the holidays.

Have a happy and safe break.
Mrs Vokolos

YEAR 1 – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear parents/caregivers,

I can’t believe we have reached the end of term 1!

One of the many highlights this term was seeing the students dressed up in their beautiful traditional outfits for Harmony Day. Students enjoyed making an Italian flag using pasta, tomatoes and basil as well as learning about the importance of various Italian family traditions.

In Literacy, we have been focussing on writing a basic Information Report based on students’ chosen mini-beast. We have learnt the structure of an information report including the classification, diet, habitat, appearance and conclusion. Students have been practising how to make their sentences more detailed by including adjectives to help describe how their minibeast moves, looks like and where it lives. We have also been making sure we proofread our writing to check we have beautiful handwriting, full stops, capital letters and finger spaces.

In Mathematics, we have been studying the names and attributes of various 2D shapes, ordering numbers from 1-100 using number lines and different types of patterns such as rhythms, shapes, colours, letters and numbers. Please ensure your child continues to practice writing numbers and number names from 1-100 as this is crucial for all topics in Mathematics.

I look forward to many more learning opportunities in term 2! Students should complete Reading Eggs and MathSeeds activities online during the school break to ensure their brains keep active!

Enjoy a well-deserved break!

Kindest Regards,
Miss Di Cola

YEAR 2 – GOLDEN GROVE

Hi Parents!

What a successful Term 1! I can see huge improvements in the students academic progress, particularly in their writing. They have worked hard exploring the features and text structure of procedures this latter half of the term, and have written many procedures independently including; how to make fairy bread, how to use a skipping rope, how to make a fruit salad, how to brush your teeth and how to make a cheese and vegemite sandwich. We are using both the Spelling Mastery program in class and running it alongside Jolly Grammar. The students have been really enjoying our literacy lessons, learning different rules and sounds.

In Numeracy, we have looked at different methods to add and subtract and thank you for your patience on these subjects. Length and Area has been fun measuring lots of different items and objects in our classroom using both formal and informal unit of measurement. We have even worked out who has the biggest feet and longest finger in the class!

HASS has been interesting learning about the World and Australian Geography. We have learnt alot this term, and I am sure many of you parents have heard the continents song over and over again! The capital cities of Australian states has been the biggest struggle for the students, some not being able to remember the capital city of Australia! But it has been fun in class using different resources and tools, such as mapping and satellite imagery, to learn more about Geography.

We have received readers at school and I have finished testing all of the students on reading. They have started to take readers home this week and we have been using a new app called BookSource, which allows students to check out books and return them to make sure they don’t get lost. Next term, I am going to focus heavily on reading and comprehension. Please note that the required level for reading for Year 2 is 18-24. If your child sits below the required benchmark for Year 2, can you please make an effort to sit and listen to your child read, ask them comprehension questions and get them to retell the story to you. Reading should be 15-20 minutes every night.

The children are really enjoying the computing lessons that we have, working on MathSeeds, Reading Eggs and Typing Tournament. It is great to see students starting to use two hands and practising their touch typing, ready for NAPLAN 2020!

Have a safe and happy term break :)

Kindest Regards,
Miss Ryan

YEAR 3 – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear Parents,

Since our last newsletter, the Year 3s have transformed into mini engineers by researching different types of bridges and critiquing what makes them so strong (did you know: the triangle is often used to build bridges because it is a ‘strong’ shape?). We built our own bridges using materials found in our classroom then tested how much weight they can carry. Our most impressive bridge was able to lift over five kilograms! Amazing!

We have also been wearing our ‘creative hats’ in Humanities and Social Sciences. We designed new Australian Flags using important colours and symbols. Because we are learning about Persuasive Texts, or ‘Expositions’ in English, we wrote letters to Prime Minister Scott Morrison, persuading him to instate our flags. Some of our letters were very convincing (if you see a new Australian flag any time soon, it was probably designed by the Year 3s).

In Science, we have continued our unit on ‘Living and Non-Living Things’ by participating in an interactive session on ‘Habitats’ at the Adelaide Zoo. We also welcomed our first class pet, Winnie the Bunny! Both experiences helped us learn about the needs of an animal; we also discovered the large responsibility of taking care of a pet.

We can’t wait to embark on more learning adventures in Term 2!

Kind regards,
Miss Mubarak

YEAR 4 – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I cannot believe how fast the term has flown by! Thank you for your consistent support and assistance with your child's learning. We have had many academic milestones made this term and I cannot wait to see how far they will progress by the end of the year!

Fractions, problem solving and data have been our Mathematics focus topics over the past few weeks. We have been delving into problems that require a multi-step approach. The children have loved the challenge! Please remember to continue to practice your times tables over the break. We endeavor to have all our multiplication facts speedy and accurate by the end of the year!

We have combined both Science and Literacy elements together to create explanation texts. The students have worked hard to increase their ‘cause and effect’ vocabulary. The children have written some fantastic texts on earthquakes, volcanoes and the lifecycle of a plant.

If you are visiting the school, feel free to take a look at our bean plants growing in the planter boxes! The students have worked hard to ensure their plants are growing in ideal conditions. In just 5 weeks, we have some plants reaching 30cms! We have been documenting their growth in our ‘bean diaries’ and it has been so pleasing to see such technical vocabulary used in the explanations!

Have a safe and relaxing break! Your children have worked hard and I am so proud of each and every one of them!

Love,
Miss Rowlands

YEAR 5 – GOLDEN GROVE

Homegroup

Our students were involved in such a lovely Harmony Day this year. They were able to dress in traditional clothes, watch a presentation of Mem Fox’s Book ‘I’m Australian Too.’ We chose the country of Morocco to learn about in our Home Group and watched some student and teacher PowerPoint presentations. Most of us helped to cook couscous, cut up the herbs, vegetables and fruit or served the food to classmates. We investigated and created tessellations to imitate the famous Moroccan ceramics, coloured flags and decorated our room. It was lovely to see so many cultures and countries represented in our classroom. I was also proud of students who tried new foods for the first time and were so eager to help with our celebration.

Maths

We have been working on a number of topics this term starting with Number basics such as place value, rounding, adding, subtracting with both mental and written strategies. We’ve looked at length, perimeter and time under the umbrella of Measurement and 2D shapes including types of triangles. Patterns and algebra were investigated by looking at pattern rules, continuation/extension and real life application. To round out the term students are engaged in a bottle tossing STEM activity which looks at data collection as well as fair testing and changing outcomes by manipulating a single factor. Students will continue to work on this project for the final week of Term 1. All Year 5 students have Mathletics tasks to complete over the break which will help consolidate their learning.

Art

This term the students of Years 5 and 6 have been studying a range of concepts linked to Aboriginal culture and stories told through their pieces of work (paintings and sculptures). The classes have worked hard to understand the symbols used in ancient rock art and how they tell stories about different kinship groups. Students have also openly questioned the differences between ancient art forms and those we see today. As part of this topic students have researched a number of prominent Aboriginal artists and used their understanding of modern day Aboriginal art to create their own artwork.

Warmest regards
Year 5 Teachers

YEAR 6 – GOLDEN GROVE

A glimpse of the Year 6 class!

Hola! On Harmony Day the Year 6s were learning about Spain! Every class had to choose a country to learn about. It was fascinating to speak this language. Here are some words we learnt: Hola! - Hello, Adios - Good-bye and Perdon! - Excuse me! We even got to make Spanish style crepes, we used icing sugar, strawberries, Nutella & whipped cream. It was delicious!

In Literacy, we have been learning about bushfires and have thoroughly researched about it. We wrote a persuasive text ‘Should you stay and protect your home from a fire? Or flee for safety? We learnt about many facts of past bushfires that occurred such as Ash Wednesday & Black Friday and used it in our writing as evidence for our arguments. We learnt to include rhetorical questions, persuasive language and clear topic sentences to convince the reader. Note: If you live in an area with bushfire risks you must have an emergency escape plan - it’s very IMPORTANT!

In Numeracy, we made bridges for our STEM activity and the only materials we used were paper and sticky tape. So were super strong and held a pile of books. It was fabolous to see a stack of books piled up on our flimsy handmade bridges. Go team!

Maths this term has covered a number of areas. We looked at place value, addition and subtraction with written and mental strategies of calculation in Number. Our Measurement topics were length and time where we looked at timetables and timelines. Our whole class attempt to put inventions in chronological order was an interesting experience and enjoyed by all. We have spent time investigating fractions, their relationship to whole numbers and equivalents. We are finishing up the term by engaging in a ‘Bottle Flipping’ STEM project related to data collection and fair testing. All students are thoroughly engaged and we are ALL finding out how difficult bottle flipping really is! All students have Mathletics tasks assigned that need to be completed by the end of the holidays. They will assist to consolidate the learning from the past term.

YEAR 7 – GOLDEN GROVE

Science

Term 1 has been a very enjoyable term for the year 7’s. One of the best things we did was visit the Elizabeth East campus science lab for some entertaining experiments. We combined sodium carbonate with vinegar to make an explosion as well as creating our very own blue crystal clouds, made from copper sulphate. We used iodine solution to create a brown substance. It was an exciting day!

Humanities

Our week 3 Humanities topic was about Indigenous Australians. Our teacher, Miss Molly, brought in some ancient artefacts (from the museum) that were used by the ancient Australians to broaden our knowledge of this topic. Some of the artefacts included a boomerang, spear point, a shield and rocks for specific purposes. It was very interesting to see and be able to touch such ancient artefacts.

Last week in Humanities, the year 7’s analysed historical sources related to ancient Egypt provided by the Museum of South Australia. This lesson provided students with a hands on experience of ancient Egyptian artefacts, while developing their knowledge of ancient Egypt. Students work in groups to analyse and answer questions about the artifacts. We were all thoroughly engaged.

YEAR 8 – GOLDEN GROVE

It is already the end of a wonderful term! Term one has gone by very fast, but time flies by when we are having fun. We hope that everyone enjoyed term one as much as we did, we met new teachers, made new friends and much more! In English, we read a very interesting book, called ‘Percy Jackson’. We took part in many fun activities about this book, and also wrote an essay. I enjoyed reading this book as much as analysing it. We also did many other fun things like badminton and dance in our PE classes. We did many plant and nature related art designs, we also turned them into printing and art work on tiles. Our class is having a big focus on wellbeing this semester, and we are working hard on strengthening the bonds within our classroom. What we enjoyed the most this term, were the activities with our classmates and friends, we really loved to work with others and I hope everyone else did too. We wish all teachers, parents and students an amazing and relaxing holiday!

Monera and Samah, 8G

It has been an eventful term in Science at Golden Grove campus. This term year 8 students have been developing their Scientific Skills through investigating and reporting, studying cellular biology in detail, and are now learning about the functions of the major human body systems.

Mrs Maik

I have some interesting news about what we have been learning in year 8 science. It has been an interesting term that has gone by fast! We began the term learning about how to plan an investigation and keep records of our research through group and individual experiments. Sometimes we worked in groups to complete investigations and even viewed specimens using a microscope.

Samah Adam (8G)

In year 8 Science this term, we learnt about the two main types of cells – prokaryotic and eukaryotic. We explored where they are found and what they are a part of. Later in the term we developed our scientific reporting skills through investigating the impact of environmental conditions on the growth of a mung bean. Inshallah we will learn more.

FOUNDATION – GILLES PLAINS

Dear Parents,

The first term has flown by and the students are well and truly into the routine of life at school. I am so proud of the progress students have made, the strong friendships they have formed in a few short weeks and their ability to work cooperatively as a cohort. I feel so blessed to be their teacher.

Since the last newsletter, we have participated in a range of very exciting activities across the curriculum. We meet some scaly and slimy creatures when the Nature Education Centre visited our school. The students loved seeing the minibeasts and reptiles up close and some of us were feeling brave enough to have a touch. We visited ‘Bob and ‘Harold’ when we went to the Life Education Van to learn about Friend-Ship. Here, Bob taught us that good friends are helpful, kind, considerate, they listen and they share. The highlight of the visit was getting to pat or hug Harold the giraffe. We also enjoyed the fun and colour of our first Harmony Day at Pinnacle College. The students loved wearing their cultural dress and completing harmony themed activities in the classroom. With all of this happening we still had time to welcome a new member to our class, Sarah Ali.

With the school holidays approaching, I would like to thank all parents for their support in Term 1, whether this be with homework, supervision on excursions or attending the brunch and/or Harmony Day assembly. Your support shows your child that you value and care about their education. Please remember to engage your child in some learning activities over the holidays and to use the ReadingEggs/ Mathseeds programmes. I wish all of the families at Pinnacle College a safe and happy holidays.

Kind Regards
Miss Bianca Villani

YEAR 1 – GILLES PLAINS

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Term 1 in Year 1 has most definitely flown by too quickly! Over the last few weeks our students have thoroughly enjoyed their learning. We have had a visit from the Nature Education Centre, where students had the opportunity to not only learn about some very interesting Minibeasts through listening but also through looking and touching. This made our learning of this Science and English topic come to life and most definitely helped us to better appreciate nature. Students have just finished writing their mini books on their favourite Minibeast which I hope you will enjoy reading soon.

Our other learning events included Harmony Day and the Life Education Van. Students did a wonderful job at singing a Harmony Day based song with the whole school and students most definitely were able to come up with wonderful definitions of what Harmony Day Means to them. For Health, the Life Education bus assisted students in understanding what changes happen to our bodies when we are worried, excited or scared. Students thoroughly enjoyed the interactive activities and were able to relate to the different examples.

In Maths, our last couple of topics have included strengthening our ability to count to 100 and make patterns. Currently we learning about the attributes of different 2D shapes and exploring language such as ‘horizontal’ and ‘vertical’. Students have been able to show some great examples of this vocabulary while going on a classroom hunt. Our shape vocabulary will also include ‘sides’ and ‘corners’ as well a being confident in being able to name and identify different 2D shapes.

Thank you for a wonderful term so far. We still have a long way to go, so working with your child over the coming school holidays on reading, comprehension through asking questions, sight words and writing is strongly recommended. If you have any questions, please feel free to come and see me or send me a message on our class Seesaw.

Have a restful break and be ready for an exciting Term 2!

Kind regards,
Ms Mackowiak

YEAR 2 – GILLES PLAINS

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Success is the result of hard work, learning from failure and persistence. We have come to the end of a successful term. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your consistent support and communication.

Students in Year 2 worked hard to achieve the addressed outcomes for this term. I am greatly proud of their effort and I look forward to another term filled with challenges, excitement, engagement and learning.

In Literacy this term, our main focus was on recounts and procedures. We spent good time learning the structures and language features of these two text types. Students demonstrated good understanding of both text types when they wrote one independently. Please continue to work on spelling and grammar with your child over the break to build their confidence in these areas.

On the other hand in Science, students enjoyed learning about the life cycle of different living things and the changes they go through at each stage. Seeing chicks hatch from their eggs was an incredible experience. Now, we are looking at mealworms and watching their growth closely to see the stages they go through before turning into adult beetles. How exciting?

HASS is one of my favourite subjects! This term we learned about the continents, oceans, lines of latitude and the states and territories of Australia and their capital cities. Well done to all my students for putting effort to learn about their planet in general and the land they live on in particular.

Once again, thank you for all your support and encouragement. Please continue to work with your child during the break and ensure they complete the given homework and the online tasks on reading eggs/eggspress and Mathseeds to the best of their ability.

I wish you a safe and happy break.

Warm regards
Nibal Al Bayati

YEAR 3 – GILLES PLAINS

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Thank you so much for your support and patience this term. It has been a term of new and exciting challenges. Your children have been wonderful, they have grown so much in maturity and have embraced the many challenges both academically and socially.

Throughout this term, I have been pleased to see many students put dedicated effort into being the big ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’ to the younger ones. They have also taken on other responsibilities in the SRC, putting in their best effort and maintaining the highest levels of courtesy and respect. I am proud of them.

We have finally completed our Science Plant Growth and Animal Habitat Project. It was exciting to see how plants survived the various conditions that students put them under. They also did some beautiful work around different animals and their habitats. The visit by the Nature Education Centre helped students to consolidate their learning.

In Literacy, students are working on Persuasive Writing, they are getting the hang of using persuasive devices in their writing and ensuring their arguments are logical and cohesive. They still need more practice in this area.

We have finally completed all assessments for the term. For the coming holidays, I will send home a booklet to help them prepare for the NAPLAN, which is on 14th to 16th of May 2019. They need to be timed and given the opportunity to work it out on their own first. You can go through with them after this but keep in mind I need to know how they performed.

Finally, once again thank you for your support and have a safe holiday. I will see you when school reopens in Term 2.

Kind regards,
Shalini Thilkan

MUSIC

All classes have continued to learn about their particular topics in Music lessons, with the older classes performing their rhythms or lyrics for assessment.

This week was even more exciting, as we had the chance to enjoy playing a whole range of new musical instruments in the Music Room at Golden Grove! Ask your children to tell you about the tambourines, bongos, guiros, djembes, finger cymbals, 2-tone blocks, glockenspiels, and any other instruments they can remember.

Stay tuned for a Music Award being presented to the class with the greatest level of participation in assemblies next Term!
