PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear parents and guardians,

We have completed another successful term at Pinnacle College with the efforts of our staff, students and parents. The past few weeks have been a great way to wrap up this term, and as always, there is more to look forward to.

Pinnacle College recently held a ceremony celebrating the official opening of the Golden Grove Campus. We were pleased to be joined by Honourable John Gardner, Minister for Education, parliament representatives, community leaders, distinguished guests, valued parents, staff and students at the grand opening. I was proud to see how involved our beloved students were in the preparation and execution of the program. A huge thank you goes out to everyone involved.

Ramadan came and brought with it many blessings. The Iftars we had together were a huge honour and pleasure. It was a great opportunity to bring staff, families and students together. I would like to thank all parents and families for hosting Iftars and assisting with other Ramadan activities. With the conclusion of Ramadan, our students enjoyed the Eid-ul Fitr festivities and entertainment on campus.

We are working on some upgrades to the facilities of our school. We are working on the Golden Grove campus to better meet our needs. At the moment, we are making some major improvements to our library. These include a whole heap of new books, renewing of furniture, shelves, and carpets. We are excited to present this as a modern, welcoming space for our students to read not only for their education, but also for their enjoyment.

Qurban time is fast approaching, and so Qurban collections for our annual charity drive have begun. This year the collected Qurbans will be sent to some Pacific countries. Students are encouraged to participate in this worthy cause and learn the act of generosity.

I would like to encourage all students to use their time wisely during their holidays: read widely and increase their general knowledge.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish students, parents/guardians and staff a safe and happy holiday! We look forward to seeing all students back at school on Tuesday, 23rd July 2019, for the start of Term 3.

Kind Regards,
Deniz Yildirim

CURRICULUM COORDINATOR

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Classrooms across Junior Primary at Pinnacle College will be adopting an investigation based approach to provide students with rich, engaging opportunities to apply their learning in creative and meaningful ways.

We are hoping to transform our classrooms into nurturing learning spaces that are more closely linked to the way studies have shown that children learn best. Across Junior Primary you are likely to find learning centres for writing, reading, numeracy, science and nature, collage, construction, tinkering, sensory and dramatic play, expertly tailored to Australian Curriculum criteria by the classroom teacher.

To transform our classrooms and create fruitful learning spaces, we are calling upon you for any donations of the following items that you might have at home:

  • Beads and buttons
  • Wool and thread
  • Wooden doll furniture
  • Toy animals

This distinct natured approach to teaching and learning combines the need for students to be active participants in their learning through hands-on and creative exploration and investigation accompanied by formal instruction. There is explicit teaching and development of not only Literacy and Numeracy skills and knowledge, but also a range of vital social, emotional and life skills.

On a final note, we are looking forward to an eventful Term 3 with fruitful events to mark the national educational weeks. The 2019 Book week theme is - ‘Reading is my superpower.’ Get creative!

Warm regards,
Tuba Sultan Cimen

DISCIPLINE COORDINATOR

Dear Pinnacle Parents and Caregivers,

There have been a number of issues raised recently about student behaviour on the school buses. We have a large number of students who travel between campuses and to other destinations. It is imperative that they act in an appropriate manner to ensure that everyone stays as safe as possible. The bus driver is unable to keep his eyes on the students at all times as they are busy manning a large vehicle and need to make sure that they are driving carefully and watchfully. Students are expected to follow the bus transport rules as set out in the school Behaviour Management Policy (see extract from the policy below).

School Bus Transport

Pinnacle College expects that all students have the right to travel safely on the school transport system. Students are required to behave in a safe manner, respectful of the bus driver and fellow students.

School Bus Rules

  • Once the journey has started, students are to remain seated at all times.
  • Seatbelts must be worn until students reach their destination.
  • Students must follow all directions of the bus driver.
  • Bags must be stored where the bus company deems appropriate.
  • Students must act in a respectful, polite manner towards the bus driver and their peers.
  • Noise level must be kept to a reasonable level - no shouting or yelling across the bus.
  • Students must keep their hands to themselves.
  • Use of electronic devices must remain appropriate and meet school expectations.
  • No eating or drinking on the bus, with the exception of water.
  • When leaving ensure you take all your belongings and leave no mess behind.
  • Students are to sit in their designated seat for the entirety of the journey.
  • If there are issues on the bus, students must follow school procedure to resolve the
  • concerns (e.g. inform the bus driver, talk to a teacher/parent/coordinator).
  • Failure to meet these expectations may result in official bus warning of suspension for one or more days from the bus service or school.

Kind Regards,
Kylie Burton

Ramadan Dinner

Dear Parent/Caregivers,

Pinnacle College (Golden Grove and Gilles Plains Campus) held its 2019 Ramadan Dinner at the Golden Grove campus gym/activity hall on Saturday 25 May. This event was organised by the Parents and Friends Committee, and was attended by many parents, students and staff.

The evening opened with a welcome message by Parents and Friends Committee member, Ms Deena Al-Jammal, followed by a lovely meal, and some home cook sweets kindly contributed by the parents. The students were thrilled to be spending some quality time with their school friends and it was a fantastic opportunity for the school community to gather together.

One of the fun features of the evening was the Ramadan photo booth. There were some humorous speech bubble signs to accessorise with, such as ‘No, not even water!’ and ‘Is it Iftar yet?!’ It was a great way for families to take home a lovely memory of the event.

Another highlight of the event was the Ramadan Quiz. Guests enjoyed partaking in the quiz, with a chance to win valuable prizes donated by generous local businesses.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to the Parents and Friends Committee members, and also parent volunteers for their effort, commitment and hard work towards the event. We would also like to thank the staff for their support, and the senior students who helped on the evening.

We would like to extend a special thanks to local businesses Mazali Platters, Cartridge World Norwood and Fuzzball Tennis Coaching who were very kind to donate prizes for our exciting Ramadan Quiz.

Lastly, we would like to thank you for your continued support. We hope you had a great time at this year’s Iftar, and look forward to seeing you at future school events.

Kind Regards,
Parents and Friends Committee

Eid Festival

To celebrate the end of Ramadan, Pinnacle College Golden Grove Campus combined with Gilles Plains Campus hosted its first Eid Festival. It was a celebration and a time for students, teachers and parents to come together and enjoy the day.

The day was also a good opportunity to raise some funds to help the less fortunate. Each class held their own stall, ranging from games to fairy floss and Henna. Well done to the Year 5 and 6s who raised over $1400!

Pinnacle College would like to thank all its staff and students. A big thank you also to all the parents that joined us with this special celebration.

Hoping you all had a wonderful Eid and wishing you all a safe and enjoyable holiday.

FOUNDATION – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear parents/caregivers,

Wow! This term went by so quickly. What a busy and productive term our class has had! Many children in our class have made large improvements this term with their Literacy and Numeracy skills.

We have learnt eighteen sounds and beginning to read and write simple sentences. We have also had a strong focus on sight words and children are using their knowledge to begin reading and writing independently.

During Science this term, we have been learning about the needs of living things. Children were given the opportunity to create their own dioramas to represent their learning in a fun and creative way.

Over the holiday period, please ensure you continue to read to your child every day, this will continue to help with their English speaking skills. Also encourage children to revise sounds, blend and write simple words and sentences. I wish you all a happy and safe holiday and will see you all back at Pinnacle College next term.

I hope that you all have a restful holiday.

Thank you for all your support!

Kind regards,
Mrs Vokolos

YEAR 1 – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear parents/caregivers,

I can’t believe we have reached the end of term 2!

One of the many highlights this term was our excursion to the Uleybury School Museum. We had the opportunity to experience the life of a student in the past! We wrote our names using an ink and quill and played with many old wooden toys and home appliances. This allowed us to consolidate our understanding of how life in the past has changed and how technology has made our lives in the present easier.

In English, we have been focussing on writing a narrative using a sizzling start. A sizzling start captures the reader’s attention by starting a story with a sound like BANG! All students were very creative when writing their stories and they remembered to include a small problem, medium problem, big problem and an exciting ending! Students worked hard to make their sentences more detailed by including adjectives, verbs and adverbs. They described what their characters were doing, how they were doing it and why. We have also been practising to proofread our writing to check we have beautiful handwriting, full stops, capital letters and finger spaces.

In Mathematics, we have been studying adding and subtracting numbers from 0-20 by using strategies including counting on and back. Students also enjoyed making pizzas and cutting them into halves and quarters. We were able to recognise and describe one-half as one of two equal parts and 4 quarters as 4 equal parts of a whole. Please ensure your child continues to practice writing numbers and number names from 0-100 as this is crucial for all topics in Mathematics.

I look forward to many more learning opportunities in term 3! Students should complete Reading Eggs and Math Seeds activities online during the school break as well as complete their holiday homework to ensure their brains keep active!

Enjoy a well-deserved break! 😊

Kind regards,
Miss Di Cola

YEAR 2 – GOLDEN GROVE

Hi Parents!

Another successful and busy term complete!

We have had our creative hats on this term for Literacy, writing narrative stories and poetry. It has been tricky for some students to put their ideas down on paper, but using the seven steps to writing program, we have learnt some new and exciting ways to write. Fabulous ‘Haunted House’ narratives were created using sophisticated vocabularies and some even had a believe-able plot! We then moved to Poetry and created some silly cinquains, shape poems, limericks and haikus. The children have enjoyed using rhyme, similes and metaphors to explore poetry.

In Numeracy, we have been looking at number patterns. It has been wonderful to see the students use problem solving skills to work out the answers and using multiple strategies to do so. We also relooked at fractions; halves and quarters but this year went one step further and investigated eights and thirds.

The students loved the excursion to the Migration Museum as part of our HASS curriculum. The students got to dress up as children from the 19th century, use slates to write on and be told what it was like to be a migrant child travelling over from England. We then walked around Adelaide, over the River Torrens Bridge, to Pinky Flat and through into Adelaide Oval.

I am very proud of how far some of the children have come since starting Year 2. The children who put in lots of effort at home to complete homework and produce amazing projects are really starting to show their great potential. Lots of reading levels have been moved up too! Please remember to read every day in the holidays and to use Mathseeds, Typing Tournament and Reading Eggs at home. If your child is not yet at the required reading level for Year 2, please note that this has a huge impact on their learning across multiple subjects.

See you in Term 3!

Kindest Regards,
Miss Ryan

YEAR 3 – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear Parents,

Can you believe we’re already halfway through the year?

Time certainly does fly when you’re having fun!

The Year 3s have thoroughly enjoyed learning about ‘Earth and Space’ in Science throughout Term 2. We visited the Adelaide Planetarium, wrote information reports (linking our learning to Literacy) and even constructed papier mache planets.

In Mathematics, we have been focusing on ‘Measurement’. We used a variety of instruments to measure the length and calculate the area of objects in our classroom, and even conducted a paper plane competition. Well done to Daniyal for winning the contest with his incredible plane, which flew over 5 metres!

In Art, we have transformed into mini-news reporters for our ‘Pinnacle News’ projects. We wrote scripts, acted roles and edited our clips using iMovie (stay tuned on SeeSaw for the final videos!). It was a great opportunity for us to build our collaborative skills as well as our knowledge of different technological applications in preparation for Term 3.

We wish everyone a safe, happy holiday (hopefully, next term will be even better than this one)!

Kind regards,
Miss Mubarak

YEAR 4 – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Can you believe that we are at the end of yet another term! I am so proud of how far my students have come and look forward to see where they will be at the end of the year. The students have worked so hard and I hope you all have a fantastic holidays with a well-deserved break!

During Literacy lessons we have been focusing on sentence structure, reading comprehension strategies and biographies. The students have been paying particular attention to ‘paraphrasing information’ as it is an important skill which will be used in many schooling years to come. We intertwined our Literacy lessons and History lessons and the students created fantastic biographies on ‘Nicky Winmar.’ Winmar was a powerful AFL player who took a huge stance against racism.

We have had some fun-filled science lessons this term! The students created mini rocket ships using balloons, string and tape to experiment the theory of ‘forces.’ We also created mini catapults and had an exciting time flinging mini marshmallows and rocks across the room.

Math lessons have been filled with chance activities, problem-solving strategies and long multiplication lessons. Please remember to stay on top of your Mathletics tasks as they are linked to what we are doing in the classroom each week.

Have a wonderful holidays, I miss you all already! Please note that I have given out holiday homework and students will be required to complete them in their black folders.

Kind Regards,
Emily Rowlands

YEAR 5 – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We are almost at the halfway mark of the school year and we have achieved some great things so far. The second half of this term we have worked hard in maths on various aspects of number; factors and multiples, mental and written multiplication strategies. We have also explored the collection and representation of data. I am so proud of all students and their amazing work on our business maths topic. They worked hard to come up with a viable business idea and supply it with donations or free issue stock to raise money for charity. They learnt many valuable lessons such as charging the right price to make money, having sufficient stock to sell and how demanding it is to run a popular business. Our most successful stalls raised $210 and $208 each. Together the whole class raised almost $650! What a brilliant contribution to charity and what an amazing contribution to their learning and life skills.

In science we continued to investigate solids, liquids and gases. We learnt that not only are there states of matter but that matter also has specific properties. Our Sciworks incursion demonstrated that gases are easier to compress than solids or liquids, that liquids are easier to manipulate than gases and that solids are easier to contain than gases. We layered different liquids to demonstrate viscosity and made mini rain simulators with shaving cream, food dye and water. Finally the visiting scientists demonstrated the powers of liquid nitrogen which boils at room temperature and was a fascinating study. They showed us how an onion can be immediately frozen after being dipped in liquid nitrogen and one lucky student was able to smash the frozen onion with a mallet.

In Literacy, students have devised their own research question based on ‘Boy Overboard’ and have thoroughly researched their selected topic in detail. Through the stages of planning, sorting facts and the research record all students commenced writing their information report.

I wish all students and parents the most restful and restorative of term breaks. I ask that, as many as can, spend time reading for pleasure. Reading is the cornerstone of education and there is no point at which you are ‘good enough’ to stop actively engaging with texts.

Stay cosy and warm these holidays and I can’t wait to see you all again next term.

Kindest Regards,
Year 5 Teachers

YEAR 6 – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear Parent/Guardian,

With only a semester to go our Year 6 cohort will find themselves enthusiastically throwing their caps in the air to the fruitful future ahead of them. In order to mark a memorable year a competition was held for the design of their Year 6 graduation t-shirts. With a collaborative approach students selected their favourite design amongst several creative options. Despite being a difficult decision for all, Jana’s design received the most votes. We warmly thank Jana for her efforts and originality (you may view her design below).

In Literacy, as mentioned earlier, students read the novel; Deltora Quest by Emily Rodda. We heavily focused on the narrative structure which explicitly linked with the ‘Seven steps to writing success’ program. Students developed uniquely defined characters and crafted their own narrative. In order to amplify their learning students were introduced to the graphic novel; Parvana. On capturing the correct dosage of inspiration students transformed their pieces into a graphic narrative.

I am so proud of the efforts of the Year 6 students in relation to their business project in Maths this term. They worked incredibly hard and with great enthusiasm on their projects. From deciding on their business to selling their ideas to the class, building stock, getting community investment, manning their stalls and changing their ideas at a moments notice to maximise their returns. This assignment was a credit to them and brought about so much in the way of learning both direct and incidental. Students learnt about catering for the desire of the end user, maintaining stock levels, keeping track of their cash, change availability, presentation of stock, discounting etc. The highest grossing stall in Year 6 raised $259.85 and altogether the Year 6 students raised almost $900. What a credit to all of them and what an amazing contribution to charity they have made. Well done Year 6s!

Finally, well done to all our Year 6 students who actively participated in the intercampus soccer tournament!

Warmest regards,
Year 6 Teachers

YEAR 7 – GOLDEN GROVE

Life Education Van

The year 7 class went into the Life Education Van to learn about responsible decision making. We learnt about how drugs affect our body and for what purposes they are used. We also learnt how to make good choices and about trust.

SAPSASA Soccer

This term, the year 7 boys and girls attending a soccer tournament against Northfield Primary school and St John’s. This was held at Roma Mitchell School where everyone tried their best and worked hard. We really enjoyed it. Even though we failed to succeed, our smile continuously struck our faces.

Museum

This term we also visited the Adelaide Museum for part of our History unit. We painted Confucius (an ancient Chinese philosopher) masks and we say all sorts of historical artefacts. We really enjoyed exploring the wonders of history.

Kind regards,
Year 7 Homegroup

FOUNDATION – GILLES PLAINS

We have had an amazingly busy term in the Foundation classroom!

The students have been involved in many experiences and unique learning opportunities. These include National Simultaneous Storytime, Walker Learning, attending a zoo excursion and festival at the Golden Grove Campus. Some of the Foundation students have been involved in the SRC and implementing lunchtime games for the rest of the students to play.

This term we continued to focus on developing our literacy skills with the InitiaLit programme. We have now met sixteen colourful and creative characters who help us remember the letters and the sounds they make. The students have started using this knowledge to write independently during our daily writing sessions. In Science we explored the needs of living things and we made habitat dioramas to consolidate this learning. We have also focused on developing the skills of persistence, resilience and organisation. There is a strong need for children to learn that something they hope to achieve, like writing independently, may at times need a lot of effort before we are successful. It is our have a go attitude and willingness to make mistakes that help us develop resilience. In the Foundation class we are using the language of ‘have a go’ and ‘I can’t do it-yet’ to show everyone that we are trying to achieve a personal goal.

Week 10 of this Term is a pupil free week, with staff participating in learning opportunities that we can implement in our teaching and learning program. During the extended break with your child, please continue to revise all sounds introduced so far and reading the tricky words. In Term 3, we will focus more on writing independently and regular practise over the holidays will support your child to help reach these outcomes.

I hope that you all have a wonderful holiday and you enjoy some much needed relaxation time together.

Kind Regards
Miss Bianca Villani

YEAR 1 – GILLES PLAINS

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Our last newsletter for Semester 2 has come around much too quickly! In Year 1 this term we have been not only learning in the classroom but exploring our knowledge out and about through visiting the Uleybury School Museum. Students were able to experience what it was like going to school in the past through writing on mini chalkboards, using an ink well and sitting at their tables in a classroom with no carpet or Smartboard. Students also got the opportunity to play with a variety of toys from the past. The wooden go-karts did not get much of a rest nor did the wooden stilts. The old kitchen tools were on eye-opener for all. Students enjoyed their experience and made the school proud with their behaviour.

In the classroom this term we have been busy with Literacy, where students have had a go at being a writer. Students got the opportunity to write their own stories and for the first time got to know the importance of a ‘Sizzling Start’. Students have been persisting with the use of adjectives, sight words and spelling and have enjoyed exploring a variety of Fairy Tales both through reading books and various class activities.

In Numeracy, we have covered many topics this term but knowing our numbers has been an important focus. Students have been enjoying their daily stretch songs, which have included counting back from 50. Learning the difference between to ‘turn’ and move ‘forward’, has also made all brains work hard during our mapping topic this term. Using Lego characters was exciting, and assisted students with their understanding of direction.

Over the upcoming holidays, I would like to encourage all families to allow their children to have a well deserved break for all their hard efforts and enjoy learning through play. To keep the momentum going, reading regularly is strongly encouraged as too is working on Mathseeds, Reading Eggs and Typing Tournament.

Thank you parents for all your support once again and I look forward to working with you next semester.

Kind regards,
Ms Mackowiak

YEAR 2 – GILLES PLAINS

Dear Parents,

We are at the end of another term! What a busy term it has been!

It has been amazing to see students in Grade 2 grow both academically and socially during this period. Well done to those who worked super hard and put effort to improve and achieve satisfying results. Now, they all deserve a break for their hard work throughout the term.

In Literacy this term, we have been writing interesting stories for our narrative focus. I am pleased to see all students understand the text type and apply some of the Seven Steps Writing Success Program in their writing (such as sizzling start). We will continue to write stories throughout the next two terms to improve the language and grammar aspects of our stories.

On the other hand, in Numeracy, we enjoyed playing some online games and watching engaging videos to help us strengthen our knowledge and understanding of concepts covered this term. Please ensure your child is using the break to revise and complete tasks on Mathseeds.

Science was hands on this term, students loved looking at different mixtures, making mixtures and describing mixtures. We looked at cake and rocky road ingredients and described them before they were combined together then we mixed all the ingredients together and described the mixtures and discussed the term irreversible. We absolutely loved the taste J.

Our excursion to the Migration Museum was GREAT and we were blessed with beautiful weather. The students got to dress as children from the 19thcentury and use stylus to write on slates. Experiencing how children lived in the 19thcentury made the children appreciate what they have and how they live now. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Deena for being an incredible help on the day, Thank YouJ.

Please ensure your child is reading a book every day and working on Mathseeds, Reading Eggs/Press and Typing Tournament.

Finally, I would like to wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday. Rest up and I look forward to seeing everyone again in term 3.

Warm regards,
Mrs Al Bayati

YEAR 3 – GILLES PLAINS

Dear Parents,

Another term has come to an end. The students are looking forward to a well-deserved break.

At the end of this term you will receive your child’s report. Reports are a great indication of your child’s progress and areas for future improvement. When speaking with your child about their reports, remember to talk about their successes, where they have made improvements and make plans together to help them achieve even more next term. If you have any questions about your child’s report, please speak with me or the relevant teachers.

This school holidays, I will be setting work on Mathletics and Reading Eggs and will be monitoring them during the holidays. Please ensure that they complete their work. In addition, please ensure your child knows his timetables to 10. This is important as it will save them a lot of time when tackling problem sums.

When we return in Term 3 we will be busy preparing for our end of year concert and sports day. It will be an exciting term and I am sure the students will enjoy it. I would like to wish you all a safe and enjoyable holiday and I will see you again in the new term.

Regards,
Shalini Thilkan

LOTE - ARABIC

Assalam Alaikom,

Today we’re few steps away from the conclusion of semester 1, One that’s been busy and full of challenges for everyone at Pinnacle, Parents, our team at the Arabic department and our children whom our essence and our mission revolves around.

Throughout Term 1 and Term 2, we ran different activities aiming at developing the reading fluency, comprehension, listening, speaking and writing Arabic skills of our children and increasing their Arabic vocabulary.

For Year 1 and 2 students at our Gilles Plains and Golden Grove Campuses learn about families and everyone make his own family tree as a project, they learn about family members, the names of them, meanings, enrich their vocabularies and develop their reading and writing skills.

Well done year 1 and 2.

At the end, we appreciate the efforts of the parents and their cooperation in helping us building and strengthening our children’s connection with the Arabic language.

Kind regards,
Ola Abdelmonem

MUSIC

Students in Year 1 have explored high and low sounds and fast and slow music, and have chosen instruments and sounds which match songs or stories. In Year 2 the students have learnt how to play ascending and descending patterns on chime bars to the song Ipsy Wipsy Spider, and have created their own soundscape following the path water takes from thunderstorm to rain to river to sea. Year 3 have learnt about Polynesian music, and have written and played 2-note melodies. Year 4 have learnt about the musical alphabet and played ostinato patterns in 3 and 4 time. They have also started to learn how to improvise on a D minor scale. Year 5 have learnt about riffs and have played their own riffs in a funky style, as well as playing chordal riffs in a calypso style. Year 6 have learnt about Celtic music and have collaborated to write and perform their own lyrics in a Celtic style, as well as playing third and held harmonies while learning about music from the Pacific Islands.

A highlight of the term has been working with the Year 4 class at Golden Grove to perform as a choir at the Grand Opening of the campus on Friday 21st June. They confidently sang ‘Count On Me’ by Bruno Mars and they truly made me very proud!

Sometimes I ask the class, “Who has played something today that they have never played before?” When most hands go up, it makes my heart sing!
