PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Term four till now has been quite a busy term and there is still much to come.

End of year ceremony preparations are underway to put on a spectacular show on the2nd and 3rd of December at the Golden Grove Arts Centre, The Golden Way, Golden Grove, with a 6:00 pm commencement. This is a very exciting time for Pinnacle College on which our students will perform and receive awards for their achievements throughout the year. Join us as we encourage our talented students and congratulate them on their successful end of year.

This year’s NAPLAN results have once again been great. It is fulfilling to see that our NAPLAN results continue to reflect the high educational standard at our school and we are motivated to improve even further with time.

Now, I would like to share with you a meaningful story by Stuart Kerner which reminds us of the value of what we already have, not what we wish...

Be careful what you wish for

Once in a far off land many years ago, there lived a poor stone-cutter who was unhappy with his lot in life. He longed to be happy and wished to be more powerful.

Now this land was one full of magic and strange powers and it so happened that the stone-cutter wished so hard, he got his wish. With a gust of wind the stone-cutter was transformed into a rich man, riding on his own camel in fine clothes with saddle-bags full of money.

As he rode, the stone-cutter thought to himself, ‘I wish I was more powerful. I wish I was a king. No one is more powerful than that.’ And once again his wish was granted.

Now he rode on a fine white stallion, with a crown of gold upon his head.

As he rode on, the stone-cutter – now a powerful king – was caught by a great gust of wind which tore off his crown and sent it flying high in the air.

The stone-cutter thought for a moment before deciding that he wanted to be the wind, which was certainly more powerful than any king and could move anything it wanted. Lo and behold, the stone-cutter was transformed into a raging current of air which blew through the land, shifting everything in his path.

That was until the great wind came up against the side of an enormous mountain which simply would not budge.

And, as you’ve probably guessed, the discontented stone-cutter wished he could be a great mountain standing proud and impenetrable, and through the magic, once again he transformed into the object of his desire.

As the stone-cutter looked out across the land enjoying the feeling of strength and power, he noticed another lowly stone-cutter chopping large slabs from the bottom of his mountain. He saw this and longed with all his heart to be a stone-cutter again, as clearly such a man had the power to tame even the greatest peak.

So finally, as the mysterious powers once again transformed the stone-cutter, he at last realized that the grass is not always greener and we need to seek contentment in the lives we have.

Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it, and then the chances are you’ll tire of it and long for what you used to have! Appreciate what you have now and make the most of your talents to build the life that truly fulfils your potential.

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT COORDINATOR

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back to the final term of 2019! It is so good to see our students at school again full of joy and enthusiasm for learning. We celebrated World Teachers Day in Week 2 this term and we thank you for allowing us the privilege of being involved in your child’s education.

All students are expected to wear hats for outside play during term 4. If students do not have a hat they will be asked to remain under the shaded areas of the school yard.

Those parents who pick up their child/ren from the Golden Grove campus, please note that teachers who are supervising the ‘Kiss and Drop’ are not able to have parent/teacher meetings or discussions at that time. We need to make sure that students are safely getting into vehicles which takes all their attention. If you wish to speak to your child’s teacher please request a meeting after 3:30 pm to allow for this. Thank you for your consideration on this matter.

Our school library is up and running now and Ms Lisa our Librarian is on site every Thursday to run library lessons with teachers. Please feel free to go in, say hello and have a look around. If you would like to volunteer to help out (it is always greatly appreciated) please let the front office staff know. Volunteers are able to get the ‘Working with Children’ check done for free.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to one of our school mums, Tammy Ariana. She has spent many hours this year assisting in the office, classrooms and the new library. We really appreciate what you have done to help our school. There would definitely not be as many nicely covered books in the library without your help. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

I wish you a happy and fruitful start to the warmer months and look forward to seeing many of you around the school campus over the next few weeks.

Kind regards,
Kylie Burton

CAMPUS COORDINATOR AT GILLES PLAINS

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to our last and final term of the year. So far it has been a busy term with swimming, end of year concert rehearsals and excursions. As we come to the end of the year, reflect on how much your child has grown and achieved this year. I am proud of each and every child at Gilles Plains as they have shown maturity and confidence since they started at the beginning of Term 1.

We celebrated World Teachers’ Day at the start of this term. I want to acknowledge the hardworking and dedicated staff at Gilles Plains. They work tirelessly to ensure your children are learning and happy each day.

Last week, I accompanied the children to swimming at Statewide Swimming Centre. Not all students took part in this activity. There are many good reasons why your child should learn how to swim. Most cases of drowning in Australia are because children are not confident in water. Playing around in the water is a big responsibility, and children who learn to swim also learn how to stay safe in the water. It is also fun and helps them to keep healthy. In addition, it is a lifelong skill. It was heartening to see the children become more confident as the days went by. Next year, I would like to see more children taking part in this activity.

Please ensure you have got tickets for our End-of-Year Concert. If is $5 a ticket and it is selling fast. Your children are excited to show you what they have been practicing for awhile now. There will also be prizes given out to children who have performed well on that night.

As we will be stock taking very soon, can you please ensure all readers and library books are returned? In addition, we would like to remind parents to pick your children up on time after school. School ends at 3.30pm and that is when you are expected to pick them up. Your child will not be supervised after 3.45pm.

Thank you for your support.

Warm regards,
Shalini Thilkan

School Counsellor

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This year we have commenced a series of parent seminars and workshops for both of our primary and secondary parents. We have had a focus of many themes that ranged from cyber safety, positive parenting, raising resilient kids and more. When notifying parents of such events we often send a text message requesting parents to RSVP via a google document which will then allow us to cater accordingly. Alongside the text message we will also post the event pamphlet on our school social media platform via Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. We have received positive feedback in relation to the workshops and we look forward to receiving more RSVP’s.

Keep an eye out for our next parent event!

Kind Regards,
Semanur Tanas

FOUNDATION – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear Parents,

I can’t believe the year has gone by so quickly! I have seen such growth and development throughout the year and I am very proud of all of my students. This term is yet another busy term with excursions, swimming and rehearsals for our End of Year Concert.

We have now finished learning all our single sounds along with our diagraphs during our InitiaLit program. Students are are loving that they are able to read and write independently. During Literacy, we are now revising and consolidating our learning, children are also writing for different purposes. It is vital that children continue to revise their sight words, complete their homework and read their daily reader. Daily reading enables children to be exposed to proper grammar and phrasing. It enhances the development of their spoken language skills and their ability to express themselves verbally. Reading daily also aids children to their vocabulary.

During Numeracy this term we have had an enjoyable time using our ‘BeeBots’ to aid our understanding on mathematical vocabulary such as ‘left’ and ‘right’. We have also been able to follow and give simple directions using the appropriate language. We are now exploring ‘Time’. Students are learning to sequence and compare the length of common events and tell the time to the hour.

Kind regards,
Mrs Vokolos

YEAR 1 – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear parents/caregivers,

I am amazed how fast this year has gone by and how well all students have progressed!

During this term in the Design and Technology and HASS curriculum, students are developing their understanding of the importance of recycling by learning the three R’s- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. To provide students with an interactive and hands-on learning experience, we decided to arrange an incursion for students to learn how to make paper using recyclable materials. This opportunity enabled students to deepen their understanding of the importance of taking care of our environment, particularly trees, as well as learn the process of paper making. Students thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with the Year 1’s from the Gilles Plains campus during this learning experience.

During this term in English, students have been studying how to write a persuasive text. We have been practicing how to write with persuasive language to convince the reader to change their opinion about various topics. Our author study this term ‘Nick Bland’, has allowed students to deepen their understanding of adjectives and verbs. Students have been working hard to include adjectives and verbs in their sentences.

Within the Mathematic curriculum, students have particularly enjoyed learning about the value of Australian coins and notes. Students were able to practice identifying and recognising the value of different notes and coins by using money in their café play area and working together to find the change needed. This also consolidates their understanding of addition and subtraction. When taking your child shopping, this would be an excellent learning opportunity for students to connect what they are learning in class to a real life context.

I look forward to many more learning opportunities in term 4 and watching students perform at the End of Year Concert! :)

Kind regards,
Miss Di Cola

YEAR 2 – GOLDEN GROVE

Hi parents!

Wow! I can’t believe that we are almost at the end of yet another term. Please remember to keep reading every night with your child as they prepare for year three!

In Numeracy, the students have been learning to use money in real life situations. We have been looking at party budgets, financial questions and how to problem solve and work out change.

For Literacy, we have started to look at persuasive writing. We started at looking at advertisements on YouTube, brochures and company posters. We then started to write using ‘sizzling starts’ and the children have come up with some amazing writing already!

Science has also been really fun as we have started to look at the water cycle. We cannot to get the water cycle song out of our heads! Come past and have a look at the water cycles on our classroom window! Hopefully it will show us the process of condensation evaporation and precipitation!

Thanks for your support!

Kind regards,
Miss Ryan

YEAR 3 – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear Parents,

Can you believe this year is almost over? It’s true what they say; time really does fly when you’re having fun!

The Year 3s are having a ‘marvellous’ time reading about the mischievous George and his rotten grandma in our class novel, ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl. Not only has the story been a great source of entertainment, it’s allowed us to learn new words, including adjectives such as ‘tremendous’, ‘whopping’ and ‘beastly’ and verbs such as ‘frothed’, ‘gaped’ and ‘guzzled’. We will be using these words to write book reviews once we complete the novel (only two chapters to go!).

The novel also ties in with our End of Year Concert Performance, which is based on ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, another novel by Roald Dahl. We have been busily memorising our dance steps and can’t wait to share them with you at the concert!

In Numeracy, we have finished our unit on Multiplication and Division. We practised how to multiply numbers using different strategies, including the split, vertical and vertical split strategies, and even dabbled in long division. Thanks to our hard work, we’ve become more confident in our problem solving abilities. A few of us are even able to solve problems using a dozen digits (who needs a calculator when you have Miss Mubarak’s clever Year 3s?).

In Science, we have been learning about ‘States of Matter’. We examined melting through an experiment using milk and white chocolate. Most of us predicted that the milk chocolate would melt first because it contains more milk, a liquid, but we later learnt that white chocolate melts faster due to its high fat content. The experiment was both eye-opening and delicious, as we had a mini fondue party afterwards.

Kind regards,
Miss Mubarak

YEAR 4 – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear parents and caregivers,

Welcome back to our final term! I can’t believe how quickly the year has gone! Term 4 has kicked off to an incredible start!

During Literacy, we have been focussing on persuasive writing. We are utilising the seven-steps to writing method which is allowing the children to explore creativity and vocabulary as well as, practicing their sentence and text structure. The students have been practicing how to use dialog, similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia and rhetorical questioning to make their writing ‘sizzle!’ Please ensure that while your child is reading each night, they are discussing the meanings of new words so that they can begin to use them in their daily writing.

Problem solving has been heavily focussed upon during Mathematics. We have delved into the area of ‘time’ and the students have done an outstanding job calculating both numerical and worded versions of the questions.

We have been grooving our way through the arts this term! Dance and drama are our major focus as we prepare for the end of year concert! We cannot wait for you to see all the funky moves and colourful costumes!

Science lessons have been full of hands on exploration! The students have done an outstanding job analysing the properties and features of different materials. They are now identifying why we use certain materials over others.

Kind regards,
Miss Rowlands

YEAR 5 – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

Maths:

In maths we have started the term looking at multiplication written strategies, divisibility, written strategies for division and number operations and properties. it is becoming apparent to students now more than ever how much their knowledge of the multiplication table impacts their problem solving ability. It is important that they continue to practice this outside of school so that they know it by rote. It is fantastic to see them grasp new concepts in number operations and solve problems using the BODMAS rules.

Literacy:

In Literacy, students are learning about ‘Poetry,’ we have delved and analysed many poetic devices, including figurative language. Students have researched and experimented with incorporating these features in their poems and are beginning to engage the audience with their choices. Currently, the Year 5 bunch are collating a folio of self-written poems. I would like to commend Zeenat Ali for her uniquely crafted folio plan, her selected theme is ‘Surgery’ and she has written a shape poem about a heart monitor and cardiac defibrillator, a haiku poem about blood and a free verse poem about her experience in a surgical theatre.

Science:

In science we are investigating the physical science of light. Learning how light helps us to see. How well or poorly we can see in low light and predicting our ability to see in the complete absence of light. Students discovered in week 2 that animals we often believe can see in the dark also need light to see. They are able to see in very low light situations but they still require the presence of light. We used ‘peep boxes’ (see photos) to look at objects with no light source inside the box and see how that affected our ability to see. Once we added a light source to the side of the box it became very clear that we do indeed need light reflecting off an object to be able to see it. We will be learning more about how light travels, interacts with objects and is able to pass through different substances over the next few weeks. It is a fascinating topic and we are all enjoying our practical experiment lessons.

HASS:

In the past couple of weeks students have been learning about the formation of the Australian Government. It has been interesting learning about the different levels of government and our parliament house, which has engaged us in understanding about the freedom and protection we receive from being in a democratic country.

Technology:

It has been very exciting learning about the past and present information systems and digital systems in our technology classes. We have discovered in the past decade numerous things have changed and technological developments are fast paced in our evolving society. Students are currently learning about resistive touch and capacitive touch screens; which helps in their skill building as they will be making their own websites in the upcoming weeks.

Kindest Regards,
Year 5 Teachers,
Mrs Burton, Mrs Tuba & Miss Sawafta.

YEAR 6 – GOLDEN GROVE

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

Literacy:

The Year 6 bunch was treated to a ‘Book Tasting’ activity creatively organised by Ms. Lisa Prestons (our librarian). Students entered the library and were intrigued by the cosy restaurant setting, they commenced with an information session with Ms. Lisa followed by the well awaited activity. During their activity students worked in groups of 5 at different tables. Each table had a variety of books from various genres including: fantasy, humour, adventure etc. Students were allocated time at each table for the entree, main course and dessert. They explored the front cover of the book and the blurb to rate books in their menu books. It was a great opportunity for students to discover the genre of book they enjoyed reading!

Maths:

Students have been working well in maths so far this term. I have seen great growth in maturity over the last 4 months in the year 6 group which is fantastic. We have been working on Prime and Composite Numbers (prime numbers are fascinating things), Written Strategies for Division, Integers and Order of Operations. The BODMAS rules are simple but the application of those rules to problems can be tricky. There can be many different answers to a problem if the rules are not followed correctly. Students need to continue to practice their multiplication table until they are completely comfortable and have instant recall of those facts. Students are expected to keep up with Mathletics tasks for homework, as well as their set homework book activities each week.

Science:

This term, in science we are learning about electricity and the different types of energy. Students find it fascinating that Electricity is a secondary energy which means another type of energy has to be transformed into electricity. Currently, students are completing their projects on a research task where they choose to explain how energy is generated or explain the types of energy.

Art:

In Art this term, students have been exploring how the elements of media arts and story principles communicate meaning by videos, cultural artwork or dances from different social, cultural and historical contexts. In class we have analysed and compared the differences in opening ceremonies, ritual activities and traditional stories Indigenous Australians or people from our own cultures perform.

Technology:

In Technology this term, students will be building their knowledge on food or fibre processes and later evaluate the resources used in the production of specific types of food/fibres. Students are currently analysing and learning about the ways in how the relationship between plants, animals and their environment are related.

Business and Economics:

This term we started our topics on Business and Economics, where students are able to understand the effect consumer and financial decisions can have on the individual, the broader community and the environment. It has been an exciting couple of weeks because the students have been engaged in learning about several factors that impact or influence the production of items and how many things need to be considered to have a successful business.

Warmest Regards,
Year 6 Teachers,
Mrs Tuba, Mrs Burton & Miss Sawafta.

YEAR 7 – GOLDEN GROVE

In 7G Humanities this term, I’ve learnt how to create and locate items on a map! During our Livability unit, I must admit it was fun when we walked around Golden Grove and wrote in our booklet about different locations and livability factors. I enjoyed every bit of it!

This term we made new ‘little’ friends in our class pets. We had our very first Long neck Turtle named ‘Tickles’ for the first 2 weeks and then the class favorites, the guinea pigs. They were very well behaved and they were very cute! Both were named. The one with brown fur around its right ear and a white body was called Cream and it’s a female! The other which has back, brown and white fur is called Caramel! This one is a male.

In HPE, we have starting coaching sessions for volleyball. Ivana from School Sport SA has come to our gym and taught us the skills and how to play the game. We are having a lot of fun and learning heaps!

FOUNDATION – GILLES PLAINS

Welcome back to Term 4! This term will be extremely busy with the students participating in a wide variety of activities in the classroom and wider community, including the ‘Music Count Us In’ Intercampus event and Swimming Week. Our End of Year Concert is on the 2nd of December, 2019. The Foundation students have been practicing their song and dance daily! We have also been practicing the song ‘We are One’ for our last intercampus event of the year.

In Term 4, the students will continue to learn digraphs through the InitiaLit program. Regular sound and sight word practice is recommended daily to consolidate the learning we do in class. Most students are writing independently now and are writing for pleasure during ‘Walker Learning Time’. It is very rewarding to see, even the most reluctant writers, creating cards, invitations and lists without prompting. Please provide resources, such as paper and pencils to your child during play at home to further promote and encourage a love of writing.

In Science, the students have become mini meteorologists by writing about the weather daily and presenting weather reports to the class. We have explored how the weather affects the clothing choices we make and the activities we participate in. Watching the weather has become one of our favourite pastimes and we enjoyed designing weather symbols for the weather we experience.

In Numeracy, we had fun learning to understand and use the words left and right. We played games, did the hokey pokey, read maps and created our own train network to show our understanding of the concepts. We are now learning about Australian notes and coins, their value and appearance.

As we approach the end of the school year, nightly reading becomes extra important to ensure students reach Literacy outcomes for the end of the Foundation year. Please listen to your child read, ask relevant questions and remind your child to swap the reader when they are ready for another book.

Thank you for your continued support in Term 4.

Miss Bianca Villani

YEAR 1 – GILLES PLAINS

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to our last term for the year!

I hope your holidays were restful and that students are ready for their last few months of Year 1.

This term in Maths, we are reviewing taught topics from the year. Currently, we are exploring fraction,s where students have been exploring this topic further as part of their Show and Tell. Our following topics will include: money, data and volume and capacity.

In Literacy, our main focus is persuasive writing. Students have just started exploring arguing ‘ for’ or ‘against’ in a couple of given topics in class. Their ideas have been fantastic! Our weekly homework will continue to explore persuasive writing and reading, to assist students with better understanding this text type. Please encourage your child to verbally give their reasons at any opportunity when at home, to assist with understanding this text type.

Our Art and new author study has come nicely together this term, as we are looking at books written by Nick Bland. This author has written some fantastic books about various bears that experience different feelings and experiences in their habitat. Students were very excited on Friday when they got the opportunity to share their Very Cranky Bear masks that we made based on this story.

In Science this term we are looking at the topic of Light and Sound. Students have enjoyed listening to stories based on sound, to match objects and will be further sharing their knowledge and understanding of light and sound as part of their show and tell.

Thank you for your support thus far and lets keep it going for just a little bit longer to make this term a great one.

Kind regards,
Ms Mackowiak

YEAR 2 – GILLES PLAINS

Dear Parents/ Caregivers,

Welcome back to the last term of 2019! It has been a great start to the term with students having participated in swimming and started practicing for our End of Year Concert. We are very excited to present our special dance to everyone attending the concert on Monday 2nd December.

In Literacy this term, students are learning how to write persuasive texts using the right structure and language features. Students are encouraged to use high modality words, rule of three, strong adjectives and emotive words to develop a strong piece of writing. Please look at the provided examples with your child at home and practice writing one to further develop your child’s understanding.

In Numeracy as every term, we are looking at a different concept such as Money, Data Interpretation and Presentation, Volume and Capacity and Worded problems. Some students found calculating change a little challenging, so they will benefit from extra work on this during their free time.

A couple of reminders:

  • Please ensure online homework is done every weekend
  • Please ensure your child is wearing the right school uniform (PE uniform and shoes are only to be worn on Thursdays)
  • Students must wear a hat during play time, please ensure your child has a school hat (No hat No play)

Warm regards,
Mrs Al Bayati

YEAR 3 – GILLES PLAINS

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to Term 4. Students came back this term feeling enthusiastic and happy. They are excited about the end of the year concert and performing for you.

In Literacy, students have just completed the book, George’s Marvellous Medicine. What a wonderful book, full of alliteration, rhymes and onomatopoeia. The plot gripped the students and kept them at the edge of their seats from chapter to chapter. They also built their vocabulary and improved their comprehension.

In Maths, we just completed the topic on Money and will be moving on to Mass this week. Money and change was a difficult topic for some but they managed to tackle it with real life problems.

For Science we are covering the different states of matter. We now know what the properties of solids, liquids and gas are. We will be conducting several experiments to show melting, evaporating and freezing.

Just a reminder if there are any readers or school library books at home, please return them by next week. Once again, thank you for your support.

Kind regards,
Shalini Thilkan

MUSIC

This term is all about consolidating the music skills that have been learnt during the year to play as class ensembles – different parts on different instruments at the same time. All classes from Year 1-5 are focussing on a song, mostly in a jazz style, which they are learning to sing and play, as well as learning simple ways to improvise.

Year 6 students are learning about Blues music and are writing their own Blues song, using either guitar or keyboard instruments in GarageBand to play 12 Bar Blues.

The Year 3s finished and played their own home-made shakers, experimenting with many ways that they can make different sounds with their shakers, and the words that would describe those sounds.

And then there is the Concert finale, The Circle of Life, which the classes are busily rehearsing separately before we bring it all together.

It’s an exciting time! And I am pleased to reflect on just how much has been achieved by the students this year, especially with the stories that the children share with me about how they are using their music skills at home.

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Dear parents,

Welcome back to the last term of the year. I can’t believe how the year went so quick.

This term we had some amazing new challenges to explore:

Year 1 class has focused this term on pronouncing and writing simple words and sentences with short vowels. The students are learning how to join letters to make words and how to pronounce and write simple words. The students will be introduced to Skoon this term.

Year 2 class has learnt to combine double vowels / long vowels in their readings and can apply some simple grammar, for example Al-Tanween, moon, sun letters and skoon. The focus this term is reading and increasing the students’ comprehension skills by learning the meaning of the words. The students started to read some simple Arabic text. In addition, the students started to learn the seasons in Arabic.

Year 3|4 class has continued with their topics with a focus on reading and building sentences. The focus is mainly on building vocabulary that will enable students to further their comprehension of the Arabic Language and its use. They are starting to build their own sentences. The students created a poster about their traditional food and they write about it. In addition, they need to create a poster and write about their invention.

Year 5|6 class had an Arabic project “Their plans for summer holidays”, the students have to write about their plans and create a poster then present it for the whole class. This is combined with reading of textbook topics, with an emphasis on comprehension.

Year 7|8 class is continuing with their topics. The main focus is reading and translating texts provided in their textbook. Students are also introduced to grammatical concepts to sentence structures and the influence of grammar on orientation of text. Also, the students had an Arabic project about “Their plans for summer holidays” to expand their writing skills and build correct structure sentences.
