Principal’s Message

Welcome to the latest issue of the Pinnacle College, Elizabeth East newsletter, for your reading pleasure.

We have had a productive and successful term at the Elizabeth East Campus. Some of the major activities organised by our dedicated staff and students, in addition to the many subject excursions and incursions are stipulated below.

Year 10 SACE Information Night: Mr Hannan organised an information session for Year 10 students and parents for both campuses and explained the importance of SACE and subject selections. It was a productive session for our students and parents.

Sports Carnival: One of the greatest events at Pinnacle College is sports carnivals. Seeing everybody enjoy the day and demonstrate a great effort to win a race or competition made us proud!. Congratulations to all teams and students for showing a spirit of winning. Particularly the winning team, Torrens!

Kindness Award: Primary school has organised an assembly to award students who have shown Kindness to others. Mrs Paula Luethen MP Member for King presented the awards to our students. I would like to thank Mrs Luethen who collaborated with us to again recognise remarkable young people in our school community spreading Kindness

International Peace Day: Pinnacle College Community Engagement Department collaborated with the community organisations such as St Peter’s Cathedral, City of Salisbury Council, Centacare Catholic Family services, Uniting Church of SA and Multifaith SA celebrated the International Day of Peace at St Peter’s on the 21st of September. Our high school SRC students were also involved and they presented a Kahoot competition and a poem writing activity ‘Acrostic poems’. At this prestigious event, the keynote speaker (Hon Rev Dr Lynn Arnold) and guest speakers have emphasised that we all need to work together to build stronger bridges and prosperous peaceful communities.

Assemblies: I am glad to see that our assemblies are well prepared and presented by our students. Both primary and secondary students demonstrate exceptional skills during our assemblies. The students enjoyed the assembly as it was very informative for them.

Vinnies Homeless Project: Pastoral Care Department has organised a number of events such as car washing, sausage sizzle and gold coin donation to raise money for homeless people in South Australia. Being part of the project, PCD organised a sleepout program at Elizabeth East Campus gym. The program consisted of a presentation, group discussions and a movie session. I cannot express my gratitude enough to all staff members and students who worked wholeheartedly to make these activities possible.

Year 12: Our 12 students have not finished year 12 officially yet but almost each subject’s curriculum has already been covered. Those youngsters will get into very busy and stressful moments due to their scheduled exams. The external exams will take place from week 4 to week 6. I wish them all the best and will pray for their success.

Till next issue

Educationally yours,
Gokhan Kot

Community Hub News

We have so many fun, engaging and informative sessions to celebrate from term 3. Children enjoyed learning through play, singing & dancing. Parents cooked up a storm in the kitchen and families where supported through their parenting journey with the help of DHS & parenting SA. We look forward to welcoming more new families in term 4.

Counselling

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

In 2021, we have partnered with Kumarninthi in accordance with our strategic goals and objectives to improve cultural awareness and community engagement at Pinnacle College. Our partnership has provided our students with educational programs, garden tours and finally a silk art painting workshop for our SACE students. We are incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn more in the space of Aboriginal and Indigenous culture. We are looking forward to developing this program further in 2022 and providing our students with a holistic and well rounded education to critically think and consider sociocultural dynamics in the workforce and wider community. Take a look at our finished artwork from a couple of weeks ago. We can’t wait to display this at the school.

Kind regards,
Mehmet Kavlakoglu

Library

Term 3 has been very busy and long term. Thank you to all classes who have displayed their Book Week craft in the library. It makes the library much brighter.

We have participated in some exciting activities, but it is now time to think about relaxing. Reading is a great way to relax. Students and staff can borrow books from the school library over the break. But the public library is also a great place to find books to read for pleasure. I would encourage parents to look at what students are borrowing from the library. If they are borrowing graphic novels/ Manga please check the rating. In the school library we are reviewing the ratings of Manga and therefore who can borrow these books. Encourage students to find books outside their preferred genre/ series to challenge their reading ability and learn something new.

If there are books you see/ hear about that you or the students feel would be a good addition to our library, please do not hesitate to suggest ideas. We are open to appropriate suggestions.

Please keep in mind the last week to borrow books in term 4 is week 6. This gives the library staff time to chase any outstanding books.

Kind Regards,
Ms Lisa Preston, Librarian

Primary

Foundation

Earlier in the term we were lucky to have the MFS visit us. They taught us about good and bad fires and what to do if there is a fire in our home. We practised cover, drop and roll in the classroom.

Year 1

Hi parents,

I cannot believe it is the end of term! We have been so busy in all subject areas and I am very proud of the achievements of all my students. We are now preparing for our End of Year concert and the children are working extremely hard to perfect their dance moves.

“I can’t wait until we dance on the stage in front of a huge audience” Amira

Year 2

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We can’t believe this term is coming to an end! We have had a great term - especially in English. We have been looking at narrative writing which has linked perfectly with Book Week. The students have had so much fun exploring the theme ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds and Other Worlds’ and have incorporated this into their own stories we are writing in class.

Thank you for your continued support!
Miss Musa

Year 3

Hi, My name is Aliza and my name is Eshaal and we are going to tell you all about what we have been doing this term. During week 6, we visited the Adelaide Planetarium and we looked at how Day and Night happens, all the different stars in the night sky and also some planets. We have been writing procedures. We made Pizza with Miss P and Ms Nibal, uploaded our own free choice procedure to seesaw, and made a paper rocket. In science, we completed our day and night dioramas and also a diorama about a special place in Australia for our HASS project. Aliza chose to make one on The Great Barrier Reef and Eshaal chose The Blue Mountains. We loved when we got to make them, because we got to work with partners, had to collect our own materials and designed them from scratch. During the holidays we are looking forward to going camping and also working on some creative holiday homework projects!

Year 5

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This term has flown by, the students and myself cannot believe that we are at the end of Term 3. We have worked so hard this term, in particular with our HASS posters on Climate Zones and our Technology/Science Project on the Solar System.

Another successful term, we can’t wait for the final term to begin!

All our best,
The Year 5s and Miss Marcoionni

Year 6

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

6A have been working very hard this term, we are about to enter our last term as Primary School students! In Maths we have learned about Transformations, we created Tesselation artworks which use at least one form of transformation of a shape.

Thanks,
6A and Mr. Schlicker

Art

Year 5 students painted moody landscapes, trees and flowers inspired by Mondrian and Cezanne. Year 6 students combined digital editing and photography with art in the final weeks. Have a great holiday break!

Arabic

Students from year 1 to 10 from the Arabic department got an opportunity for an introduction to Arabic calligraphy this term. As the influence of Islam in the Arab world so as the culture, Muslims don’t decorate prayer places with pictures or statues so Arabic calligraphy is used to decorate prayer places and even homes. Students were happy with the introduction to Arabic calligraphy so we are aiming to continue at least once a semester.

Secondary

Art

Year 7 students completed their cultural masks by painting them and adding the final touches. Year 8 students enjoyed more ways and techniques of artistic digital photography such as illusion photography and black and white portraits. We approached the end of Term 3 for a well-deserved rest!

English

Year 8

English, the first thing you think about when you imagine English is boredom, a lesson filled with words that make your brain all mushy. But it isn't always like that, in some cases English can be fun and challenging, although rare, it actually happens! Throughout the terms we have already learned and mastered a variety of language techniques, such as Teel and Raft. As incredibly dull as it sounds, we still did some fun stuff, like investigating a crime scene and drawing graphic novels. As of now, we’ve read 2 books; Percy Jackson and Hatchet, as well as watching Maleficent, all of which we analysed and did assignments on. I hope for more fun activities in the future!

Year 10

Arrival is an amazing sci-fi thriller that premiered in 2016. Inside the movie, Louise Banks, a linguistics expert, along with her team, must interpret the language of aliens who have come to Earth in a mysterious spaceship. The Year 10 boys have eagerly watched the movie in which they analysed many different sci-fi conventions and produced a podcast on them. Arrival shocked the Year 10 boys and they couldn’t hold back their comments.

Humanities

In Stage 1 Psychology, students have just begun studying the topic of Forensic Psychology. The study of Forensic Psychology involves the analysis of the brain and behaviour from a law enforcement perspective. Students began this topic with a fun activity of finger-printing which they will then use for a criminal profiling activity!

Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care Sausage Sizzle Stall

In the last week of the term, Year 10 students organised a sausage sizzle stall to raise some funds for our current “End Homelessness” project that has been initiated to support homeless community members. They enjoyed to be part of such a good cause
